Biography

Dr. Patty Malone is committed to helping others achieve their career goals. Patty has seven years experience teaching career communication skills and coaching people in their careers. She is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University Fullerton teaching courses in Interviewing Skills, Principles, and Practices.

Her love of communication began with her first career as a TV News Anchor. She developed excellent broadcasting interviewing skills while in this that position as well as learned how to win the jobs she wanted in a highly competitive field.

Patty has worked with business schools to coach their MBA students in preparing for the interview and sharpening their presentation skills. She has facilitated workshops and sessions at the University of Texas at Austin. These included:

  • Annual two-week workshops on professional communication skills. A substantial portion of the workshops consisted of training interviewing skills and training presentation skills.
  • Weekly sessions throughout the year training in interviewing and professional presentation skills for Speakeasy sessions in the business school.
  • Conflict workshops and Leadership Skills training sessions conducted for the Center of Ethical Leadership.

She also taught courses in Interviewing Skills, Business and Professional Communication Skills, Sales Briefings and Presentations, and Organizational Communication.

Her primary area of research focuses on dysfunctional communication in organizations: miscommunications, communication breakdowns and failures. Most organizational problems can be traced directly to breakdowns in communication. She knows how to help people overcome, and even prevent the pitfalls from dysfunctional communication and create productive working relationships.

  • Her dissertation examined envy in the workplace and how employees communicatively respond to envy “Communicative Responses to Malicious Envy at Work.”
  • Her master’s thesis explored backstabbing in organizations “Organizational Conflict: Coworker Backstabbing.”

Patty has three degrees in communication:

  • Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin
  • Master of Science in Speech Communication from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg
  • Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from California State University Sacramento

Previously, she worked as a Television News Anchor in California and Nevada, in Public Affairs for General Dynamics, and as a Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She has won numerous awards for her news, sales, corporate achievements, and academia.
